The slam of a door broke the stillness of the sleeping house. The girls’ eyes opened to the darkness of the room. “Chaya,” Dassie whispered, her voice shaking in fear, “did you hear that?”

Chaya jumped up in her bed, suddenly alert. “The robbers?” she whispered loudly.

“You think so?” Dassie trembled in her bed. “I’m scared.”

Chaya repressed the urge to say “me too.” With a little bit of spunk and imagination, she could turn this into an adventure. Yes, she would turn this into an adventure.

“Let’s go catch them.”

“No way!” Dassie half whispered, half shouted. “Are you crazy?”

“No.” Chaya stood up and put her slippers onto her feet. “Come on, Dassie.” She went over to Dassie’s bed and shook her cousin.

“I’m not catching any robbers,” Dassie said. “We’re staying right here in bed so that they can’t hurt us.”

“But then maybe they’ll steal something. Or maybe they already stole something.”

“So let them,” Dassie burrowed her face under her quilt. “Let my father catch them. Not me.”

“But your father is sleeping. There’s no one else to catch them. Only us.”

“What will we catch them with?” Dassie asked.

“With…” Chaya racked her brains. “We’re running out of time. Even if we don’t catch them, we should at least get a look at them so we can describe them to the police.”

They heard the sound of a car engine starting downstairs. “That’s the robbers for sure, getting away. They’ve already left the house. Now we have nothing to be afraid of,” Chaya pulled her robe off of the chair where she’d thrown it the day before and quickly put it on. “I’m going to see what they look like.”

“Don’t go by yourself! I’m coming too.” Still trembling, Dassie fumbled for her own robe and the two girls made their way down the steps to living room.

“Chaya, are you sure we’re…” Dassie clutched Chaya’s hand tightly as the two girls inched their way closer to the front door.

“I’m sure.” Chaya reached out to unlock the front door. “I wonder how they managed to break in so sneakily, without making any noise.”

“Maybe we should wake my father.”

“There’s not enough time,” Chaya insisted. “And it’s gezel sheinah anyway.” She pulled open the front door, just as the car with the two robbers reached a red light at the end of the block. “They’re going through red!” Chaya shouted. “Now they’ll be in real trouble.” She strained her eyes to see. “There are two people in the car. And one of them is a man for sure. But I can’t tell about the other one.”

“Of course it’s a man,” Dassie said. She squeezed her eyes tightly shut. “Whoever heard of a woman robber?” Chaya shrugged. She stood on tiptoes, craning her neck to get a better view. “Maybe we should chase them down the block.”

“In our pajamas?!” Dassie’s tried to pull her cousin back into the house. “We can’t go out like this. And besides, maybe they’ll kidnap us.”

“Nah,” Chaya waved the notion away. “They’re robbers, not kidnappers.” She continued following the car with her eyes. “There, the car turned the corner. Now I can’t see them anymore.”

“Let’s go back inside,” Dassie tugged at her cousin’s arm.

“One minute,” Chaya carefully examined the locks on the front door. “I wonder how they came into the house so quietly that we didn’t even hear them until they left.”

“Who cares?” Dassie shrugged her shoulders. “The important thing is that they left now.”

“But…” Suddenly, Chaya froze. “I don’t believe it,” she pointed at the driveway. “Do you see what I see?”

“What?” Dassie was still standing inside of the house, so she had to crane her neck in order to see. “My family’s minivan is there.”

“Your family’s minivan is there,” Chaya said. “But Zeidy and Bubby’s car isn’t. The robbers stole the car!”
